Laing O'Rourke has been fined £135,000 today after a recently married steel fixer fell to his death on an east London building site.

Keiron Deeney, 25, had been married for just 13 weeks when he fell more than 9m through a hole in the floor that had not been covered up properly in August 2004.

He had been working on the construction of the £55m Discovery Dock apartment and office block.

Laing O'Rourke, pleaded guilty to a single charge under health and safety legislation at an earlier hearing.

The firm was fined £135,000 and ordered to pay more than £18,000 in costs.

A Laing O’Rourke spokesperson said:

“This case saw a tragic loss of life of a young husband and of course no amount of money can bring him back.  As with all accidents lessons can be learned and this case reinforces our determination to ensure that every individual, on all of our sites, takes personal responsibility for safety.  The primary focus of the company is for everyone to get home safely every day.”
