A total of ten firms are on the starting grid for a £200m+ Welsh highways civil engineering framework.
The four-year framework for Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council is known as the "South East Wales Highways Contractors Civil Engineering and Surfacing Framework Contract".
Nine other Welsh local authorities, including Cardiff Council and Newport City Council may also operate within the framework.
Costain is thought to be one of the major winners on the deal, bagging a spot on three of the six lots within the scheme.
A source told CJ, "These are the names of the frontrunners - the winners have not yet been announced officially. But it looks as if Costain has got onto three separate lots, with BAM Nuttall, Morrison and Alun Griffiths each getting onto two.
"The individual lots are not huge - the biggest is for works up to £10m - but the overall framework could be in the region of £200m, so this award is going to be very welcome indeed."
The lots are split according to the value of the works that need to be undertaken, and cover four different geographical zones across the county.
The first five lots exclude surfacing works, while the sixth will require contractors to provide surfacing works in zone A (encompassing Blenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Newport, Rhondaa Cynon Taff, Torfaen and Vale of Glamorgan).
The work is due to start in spring this year and is set for completion in spring 2013.
