Springfield wins £15m social housing deal, creates 150 new jobs

Elgin-based house builder Springfield has won a £15.1m contract to construct more than 400 affordable homes in the Moray region of northern Scotland.

The homes were awarded through the Moray Volume Procurement Initiative, a partnership between Grampian
and Langstane Housing Associations and the Moray Housing Partnership.

Six months ago, Springfield was forced to lay off 70 workers, around 30% of its staff, due to the collapse in the private housing market.

But this contract win means the house builder will be advertising for 150 new recruits, almost doubling its workforce.

Managing director John Main said: "Back in November we did have to make cutbacks and reduce overheads because of the lack of activity within the construction industry.

"We have had a lot of very positive signs for the private housing market with a strong run of sales in January, February and March and this, coupled with the deal we have in place for affordable housing, means we are actively looking to recruit.
