BAM Construction has beaten off Galliford Try in the final run-in for a £30m college deal in Liverpool.
The job centres on the Liverpool Community College's campus in Roscoe Street and work on site is expected to begin in July.
The project features a new building to accommodate a sports hall and fitness rooms, as well as a state-of-the art learning resource centre.
The building will also incorporate a nursery, cafe and meeting spaces.
The contract was procured under the usual design-and-build, two-stage tender process.
A source close to the project said: "This was a particularly fiercely fought contest. The continuing economic gloom and the increasing need to win work mean the gloves are well and truly off. Not so good for contractors, of course, as every passing day shows that it's becoming a client's market."
The new structure, designed by local architect Ellis Williams, is in response to increasing enrolments at the college and students' needs for specialised learning.
