Clough Smith Rail wins £24m traincare facility redevelopment

By Neil Gerrard

Clough Smith Rail has been appointed as the main contractor for the £24m redevelopment of the Shields Traincare Depot in Glasgow.

The firm will build the new depot, as well as performing rail operations work at the site, while Siemens will provide the main machinery to be housed in the depot including a new wheel lathe and bogie drop.

Work on the project is to start immediately.

The depot, which is located to the west of Glasgow city centre, will house and maintain a fleet of 38 Siemens Desiro Class 380 electric trains, which will run on Ayrshire, Inverclyde and Renfrewshire routes.

It will operate a number of activities including maintenance, interior cleaning, toilet-emptying and re-fuelling as well as housing trains overnight.

The new train fleet and expanded depot facilities are expected to create 130 new jobs in Scotland.

Work is scheduled for completion by the end of August next year. The new trains will start coming into service from September 2010.
