Olympic construction on Stratford Regional station bridge - VIDEO

By Janie Stamford

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has released a video of work at Stratford Regional Station aimed at trebling capacity in preparation for the spectators that will use it everyday during the London 2012 Games.

The time lapse footage shows the Town Centre Link Bridge being pushed over the 11 railway lines at Stratford in three stages this year. The bridge will link the existing Stratford town and new Stratford City development.

By 2016, the number of passengers at Stratford Regional Station in the morning peak is expected to more than double from 37,000 to 83,000. The work to treble the capacity of the station and improve accessibility is aimed to help meet this future demand.

ODA Transport Director Hugh Sumner said: “The new pictures we have released today showing the progress at Stratford Station will give people a sense of what is going on behind the scenes. Stratford Station will be completed as early as 2010 – which means that the benefits will be felt two years before the Games start.”

The new entrance for the station at mezzanine level will help reduce congestion during the Games. It will allow people leaving the Olympic Park to bypass the subways and use a new bridge to directly access the new Central line and DLR platforms for services towards London.

Work at the station that has already been completed includes:

  • Platform 6/8 has been widened
  • Platform clutter has been removed, creating more space on the platform
  • Two of the new lifts are already in operation.

The ODA is also restoring and re-opening the eastern subway. The subway will reduce congestion and provide easier interchange between services.
