Interserve wins £110m prison contract

By Will Mann

Interserve has won a £110m design-and-build contract for a new prison at Belmarsh in Woolwich, south-east London.

The contractor will build a 480-place 'training prison' for young adult males inside the perimeter wall of the existing HMP Belmarsh.

The work includes construction of two three-storey residential blocks, a two-storey entrance building, plus another building for teaching and leisure facilities.

The new prison will be built to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating through the use of a combined-heat-and-power plant plus biomass boilers.

Construction is scheduled to start by the middle of 2010.
