Carillion has priced the construction of a modern verion of Hadrian's Wall at £400m, and estimates that it would take 1,500 construction workers around two-and-a-half years to build.
The contractor was asked for the unusual estimate by Hadrian's Wall Heritage as part of a series of re-enactment events taking place across Hadrian's Wall this week, reports the North West Evening Mail.
Hadrian’s Wall, one of the biggest construction projects undertaken by the Roman Empire, is Europe's longest historic monument. Historians believe it took 1,500 Roman soldiers about six years to build.
Linda Tuttiett, chief executive of Hadrian’s Wall Heritage, said: “It can be difficult for some people looking at what remains of Hadrian’s Wall to really appreciate quite what an extraordinary achievement it was.”
