A refurbishment contractor has accidentally sprayed wet cement on more than 200 cars, while carrying out repairs to a road bridge in Southampton.

Concrete Repairs Limited (CRL) damaged vehicles passing over the Redbridge flyover when workers underneath accidentally sprayed  cement on to the highway above, reports the Daily Echo.

The contractor has apologised for the damage.

In a statement, CRL said: “Since the incident, our Bristol office has been busy taking details from motorists affected. We would like to thank callers for their patience and understanding and apologise for inconvenience caused.

“We have advised the owners of affected cars not to remove the grout themselves and have made arrangements with our subcontractor’s insurer to make sure that all damaged vehicles are cleaned professionally.

"The insurer is now in the process of contacting each individual car owner directly to advise the procedures for repairing the vehicle.”

One car owner affected, Brian Hirst, had bought his Jaguar just three days before it was sprayed with cement.

“I had no idea what it was or what to do,” he told the Echo.

“I tried to wash it off with a pressure washer but it wouldn’t come off. It was only when I saw the Echo article I knew what to do.”

CRL has not confirmed how many vehicles were affected by the cement spray, but says motorists who were affected can call the firm on 0117 986 8088.
