Crane, access platform and pump drivers exempt from Driver CPCs

Drivers of mobile cranes, truck-mounted access platforms and lorry-mounted concrete pumps will not have to hold a Driver CPC, according to the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA). Rule changes come in in September which require drivers of large goods vehicles (LGVs) to undergo 35 hours of training every five years in order to renew their vocational licence.

However, the CPA has confirmed with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) that mobile crane, HGV-based access platform and truck-mounted concrete pump drivers won't require CPS as their vehicles don't carry a load and are only on the road incidentally. "It's possible that drivers of other vehicles that only carry equipment could make a similar argument to VOSA," said the CPA's legal manager David Smith.
