Perkins' new 854 engine completes its Stage IIIB product range fitting between the 400 and 1200 series.
The four-cylinder, 3.4-litre aftercooled engine has an output range from 45kW to 86kW with a maximum torque of 420Nm between 2,200 and 2,500rpm. Full-authority electronic controls manage the common rail fuel injection and 'smart waste-gated' turbocharger - an electronic device that optimises air/fuel ratio for cleaner, more efficient running.
Perkins said the range offers greater power density and improved fuel consumption and gives plant manufacturers the choice of downsizing the engine capacity to accommodate the exhaust after treatment (both wall- and through-flow DPFs are available) that will be required beyond 2011.
The engine has been developed within a new partnership between Perkins and Fiat Powertrain Technologies and will be built in Turin.
