Developer chases Costain for £1m

Costain is being chased by a Surrey developer for more than £1m.

The dispute relates to work the £1bn turnover contractor carried out for Chord Developments on a site known as St Paul's Square in Birmingham.

The firm signed up to the £20m office and residential scheme in 2006.

But Chord later claimed Costain owed it £1.2m in liquidated damages following a dispute between the pair on the job.

At an adjudication hearing on 22 June, Costain was told to stump up the cash, but Chord says it has refused to pay.

In a claim issued at the High Court a week after the hearing, Chord alleged: "The defendant has failed and/or refused to pay the amounts awarded/directed by the adjudicator."

Costain declined to comment.
