Honda's new EU30i generator is a 3kW unit (2.6kW continuous) that weighs only 35kg and imposes just 8kg on the suitcase-style handle, allowing it to be moved by one person, and it has large wheels to cope with uneven ground.
While it is primarily aimed at the leisure market, its portability makes it attractive for powering hand tools and the like on construction sites.
Power comes from an air-cooled 160cc engine with the compact design having a 'cold' side (electronics, fuel tank, generator and fan) and a 'hot' side with the engine and exhaust. Between the two is a manganese separator with an airtight seal to ensure all the air passes through the generator.
Restricting the fuel tank to 5.8 litres minimises the weight but does limit the time between refuelling to below eight hours.
