Sir Robert McAlpine looks set to beat BAM Construction, Sir Robert McAlpine and Bovis Lend Lease to the £90m contract to build a velodrome and sports complex for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The news comes as a report recommending the appointment will go before Glasgow city council's executive committee on Friday.

Work on both facilities is expected to start later this year, with completion due in early 2012.

The National Indoor Sports Arena will be able to hold up to 5,000 spectators, while the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome will have 2,000 seated and 500 standing spectators.

John Scott, chief executive of Glasgow 2014 Limited, said the expected appointment of Sir Robert McAlpine as "another major milestone".
