Crane collapses onto supermarket roof

A supermarket manager said he is thankful to be alive after part of a crane landed in his office in Co Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Keith Glasgow was away from his office in Woodside Supermarket in Carrickfergus when part of a crane belonging to Graham Construction fell through the roof and ceiling of the supermarket building.

It crashed into his office on Wednesday, bringing down plasterwork and scattering slate and glass in its wake.

The father-of-five, whose youngest child is just five weeks old, rushed back into his office to discover a scene of destruction.

He told the Belfast Telegraph: "I am thankful today that I am alive. My children are thankful they still have a father and my wife that she still has a husband.

"My first thought was that if I had been sitting there, I would have been killed."

A spokeswoman for Graham Construction said: "We confirm that there was an incident where a crane tilted sideways from its working platform when the ground below it gave way on a site in Carrickfergus.

"There were no injuries arising from the incident. We are co-operating with the relevant authorities as they and we investigate the cause of this incident. Until these investigations are complete we are unable to make any further comment."
