Boost for truck sales as RPC incentive nears end

By Colin Sowman

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said truck registrations could be boosted this month by owners taking the last chance to get a Reduced Pollution Certificate (RPC) for Euro 5 vehicles.

Its manager for commercial vehicle affairs Robin Dickeson said: "This is the last month the UK government's RPC incentive will be available for Euro 5 trucks as the incentive stops once Euro 5 becomes mandatory on 1 October. So there is a one-off opportunity to add around £5,000 to the value of a heavy truck over its 10-year life."

The RPC pays up to £500 a year for the life of the truck and transfers to subsequent owners.

In addition, Dickerson highlighted that dealer stocks are currently high, while those delaying ordering face the prospects of big price rises caused by Sterling's fall against the Euro and vehicles registered in September get a "59" plate, increasing residual values.

Despite any September boost, Dickerson said: "We could see annual figures at or near a record low before they start a slow recovery."
