Balfour Beatty has issued a statement to the City, informing investors that its Mansell unit has been fined £5.2m.
But the firm indicated that any anti-competitive practices Mansell had been involved with had taken place before it was acquired by Balfour Beatty in 2004.
The company also pointed to the fact that other firms had been fined far larger amounts, including Kier with an £18m fine, and Interserve, with an £11.6m fine.
