CJ Awards 2009: Excellence in ICT

Skanska took 3D modelling to the next level at its major Barts & London hospital project for the NHS Trust in London.

The project team realised that in addition to using clash detection tools with 3D software they could take a giant stride forward by linking to the building programme to deliver a so-called 4D model to help trade contractors and progress monitoring.

It also enabled the Skanska team to check for safe access during construction and operation as well as confirm major plant installation.

Planners updated the data with start and finish times which was used in progress meetings and at monthly valuations with subcontractors.

Overall the project team made data work harder, bringing big savings in the tendering programme as data was used to populate subcontractor estimating packages.

The judges said: "Skanska has set itself apart from the competition.

"The Barts and London started out as a 3D model with clash detection and was developed into a tool to improve quality, reduce costs, waste and save time.

"The 4D model really adds a new dimension to the construction process."
