Micro-CHP consortium to take on mass market

According to COGEN Europe, the pan-European trade association promoting Combined Heat and Power (CHP), there is the potential for 50 million installations. Key markets include the UK, Netherlands and Germany.

Engineering and technical expertise for the mass market CHP system is being provided by Cambridge Consultants, a company with experience in developing products for highly regulated industries.

There is no doubt that micro-CHP will play a significant role in the future of electricity generation, not just in Western Europe, where there is currently high demand, but globally,” said Cambridge Consultants’ Duncan Smith.

It is seen by European governments as a means of meeting carbon emissions targets. A study by the Energy Savings Trust in 2005 showed that, by 2050, micro-CHP systems could provide 30-40% of the UK’s electricity needs.

“There is significant demand now, therefore the market needs a product that costs around the same as current systems, yet can deliver the high efficiency that the technology promises.”
