EDF Energy have been confirmed as winner of a multi-million contract to deliver the electrical network for the site for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the adjoining Stratford City development.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and Stratford City Development confirmed EDF subsidiary Lee Valley Utilities will design, construct and operate the electrical networks for the 2.5 square kilometre Olympic site and the Stratford city scheme.

Simon Wright, ODA director of infrastructure & utilities, said: “These utility networks and infrastructure are not just for a summer of sport in 2012 but will power the long-term regeneration of the area for many years to come and show that we are planning Games and legacy together from the very beginning.”

The work will include laying 100-km of electrical cabling and building more than 100 substations and will start this summer.
Vincent de Rivaz, EDF Energy chief executive, said: “We’re delighted to have been awarded the contract to build the electrical network for the Olympic Park and Stratford City developments which further extends our involvement in the vital infrastructure work for the Olympic Park.”

The scheme is the second Olympic job for EDF, which last November picked up an estimated £10 million job for the ODA to build a transformer substation for the games at Kings Yard in Stratford.
