The proposed convergence of the Heating & Ventilating Contractors Association (HVCA) and the Electrical Contractors Association (ECA) has moved a step closer after a survey was sent to members of both associations asking for their views on the plan.
HVCA president John Millar (pictured) said that discussions on the merger - or 'convergence' as it is being described - had been taking place between officers of the two trade bodies, and that members were now being asked to give their views on two key issues.
"Firstly, we have asked them to support the concept of convergence - the creation of a single organisation for M&E contractors," said Millar.
"Secondly, we have asked them to support the formation of a convergence board that will examine the views expressed by members, and produce a model for a single organisation."
The results of the survey will be announced at councils of the two associations in March and April. Millar said the outcome would not be binding.
Asked whether he expected the convergence to go ahead, Millar answered, "The time is right, and I think we'll get there. If you look at our sector, most firms are now M&E firms, rather than separate H&V and electrical businesses.
"Also, the unions have merged, and we're currently working with the ECA to harmonise employment terms and conditions across both disciplines."
The combined membership of the HVCA and ECA numbers over 4,000 companies, but only 213 are members of both associations.
