Save the environment by going to the pub

An eco-friendly pub built with “green” timber that uses water heated by a canal and contains waterless urinals will open in Scotland in two weeks.

The Boathouse, to be opened at Auchinstarry by British Waterways, is the first in a string of environmentally-friendly pubs to be built near canals in the country.

The pub is made of sustainable timber and gets hot water and heating from a geothermal system, using residual heat from water in the nearby canal, reported the Scotsman.

This heat is captured by a 2.1m long radiator at the foot of the canal.

Waste water from the pub is treated by reed beds on the other side of the marina, after the solids have been removed.

The Boathouse is being developed by the Waterside Pub Partnership, a joint venture between British Waterways and Scottish and Newcastle.
