Scaffolder fined £50 for van fag break

A scaffolding worker has been fined £50 for smoking in a company van.

Thomas McSorley, of Accrington, Lanarkshire, was caught smoking a cigarette in his company van last November by a Pendle Council officer.

He was issued with a fixed penalty notice but after failing to pay the £50 fine, the case was taken to court where magistrates at Reedley Magistrate’s Court proved the case in his absence.

He was ordered to pay the fine and an extra £150 in costs.

The court heard that McSorley had a no smoking sign in the van.

It is illegal to smoke in a company vehicle.
