Queen and Prince Charles join eco-town bid

The Queen and Prince Charles have joined the government’s controversial eco-town scheme, after three developers withdrew their bids.

Prince Charles’s Foundation for the Built Environment has been asked to advise on the design of a proposed 5,000 home town near Nottingham.

The crown estate has joined with the Ministry of Defence and firm Newton Nottingham to develop property around the former RAF base at Newton.

The site replaces another previously selected, at nearby Kingston on Soar, according to the Guardian.

In the past two weeks three developers have pulled out of the scheme, with Gallagher Estates axing its involvement in a town in Marston Vale.

CJ reported yesterday that Curborough Consortium, involving Gleeson Homes, Redrow Homes, Hallam Land and Banks Developments, had scrapped its plans for a town near Lichfield in Staffordshire.

East Lindsey District Council in Lincolnshire also withdrew its bid for an eco-town at Manby following strong local opposition.
