MIT invention could turn windows into solar panels

Windows could be used as solar panels thanks to a new technology that could slash the cost of green power.

A team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed windows that use transparent dyes to capture, concentrate and redirect light along glass.

The dyes flow into solar cells in the window’s frame, which then converts the light into energy.

The frame then converts the light into energy.

According to the Guardian, the MIT team say the technology could cost less than 50p per watt to build and be available commercially within three years.

Currently photovoltaic technology is an expensive alternative to standard power, but the windows would be cheap enough to viably compete.
