Greenwich Park could be closed for 10 months and key historic trees pruned to make way for Olympic equestrian events.

Olympic organisers have revealed the park is likely to close for seven to eight months for construction and competition during the spring and summer of 2012.

Major construction work is expected to begin in March 2012 and the park should be handed back six weeks after the Paralympic Games finish on 4 September.

According to the Evening Standard, smaller versions of the facilities will also be built for a test event in spring and summer 2011.

Most of the upper part of the park, including the observatory, will remain open.

Between a quarter and third of the park faces prolonged enclosure.
