Olympic officials heed residents' noise complaints

London 2012 officials have promised to keep noise on the site down following a complaint to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by Hackney residents.

Neighbours in Leabank Square, Hackney Wick are unhappy that a soil washing plant is allowed to operate until 10pm - outside of core 7am to 6pm working hours.

Resident Sóna Abantu-Choudhury wrote to the IOC claiming Olympic officials were not taking the neighbourhood's concerns about noise and dust seriously

He said: "The machine is intensely noisy, and from 7am to 10pm trucks line up to feed it.

"We get fobbed off in public meetings so I wrote to the IOC about it - the Olympics are their franchise and they are not treating their neighbours respectfully."

Last week, the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) announced 10 community commitments to minimise the impact of construction on neighbours.

An ODA spokesman said planning permission allowed the soil washing plant to operate until 10pm at 57 decibels - down from the 75 decibels allowed during core hours.

He said: "We are making every effort to minimise the impact of dust and noise."
