Queen goes green with hydroelectric power at Balmoral

The Queen has gone green and turned her Scottish estate Balmoral into a biodiversity haven.

In an effort to make the property self-sufficient, she has installed a small hydroelectric plant on a stream in the estate’s forest that is selling power back to the national grid.

The plant generates enough electricity for the Queen’s residence and 1,000 homes in the area.

As part of her own comprehensive biodiversity action plan for the estate, she has also registered Balmoral’s woodlands with the Forestry Stewardship Council.

All organic waste on the land is recycled, while machinery is powered by bio-diesel and biodegradable lubricants and oils.

According to the Daily Telegraph, “green champions” work in each department and security are encouraged to use bicycles to patrol the property.

The aim is for Balmoral to become the first in the Royal household to become self-sufficient.
