The London 2012 velodrome has become the first purpose-built Olympic venue to secure its future.

Olympic chiefs have agreed to spend £12m transforming the velopark into a top training base after the Games, installing mountain bike trails and a road circuit.

The Lee Valley Regional Park Authority will underwrite annual running costs of £500,000, according to the Evening Standard.

Meanwhile, the velodrome will become a training base for top cyclists under a deal struck with British Cycling.

The Authority’s chief executive Shaun Dawson said: “After 2012, the velopark will be the cycling hub for London and the South-East.

“Schoolchildren and families will be able to cycle alongside Olympics champions.”
