Brick manufacturer Weinerberger will axe almost 100 staff as it scales back operations at two of its UK factories.

The firm will cut 71 jobs at its Hartlebury and Warseley, Kidderminster plant and another 27 at Eldon in County Durham.

A spokesman for the company said it would also extend the shut-down period for other factories in the UK into the New Year.

“We strongly believe (at Eldon) this is just an extended lay off and not a shut down,” the spokesman said.

“We can see this plant has a long-term future. But unfortunately we have had to slim down staff across two locations because there is not enough demand.”

In June the company announced it would mothball sites in Devon and Surrey because of the downturn, resulting in about 80 job losses.
