UK's tallest wind turbines planned for Wales

A renewable energy company is planning to build 65 of the tallest wind turbines in the UK in Wales.

Npower has selected the 137m high turbines for 2,000ha of land near Llanbrynmair in Powys.

They will have the capacity to generate between 130 and 195 megawatts and could supply energy to between 63,000 and 94,500 homes each year.

The plans are yet to be approved, but Npower say the turbines would be visible from Snowdonia National Park and from Cadair Idris.

Wind energy consultant Geoffrey Sinclair told the BBC: “The turbines planned for this site are substantially bigger than any currently on mainland UK sites.

“They are similar in size to those that are being built off-shore.”
