Lagan Construction has won the contract to build the major footbridge across the River Lea at Olympic Park.

The firm will begin work next year on the landmark 30m bridge, which will become a focal point between the Olympic stadium and aquatics centre.

Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects with Adams Kara Taylor Engineers, the single bridge will be transformed into two footbridges in legacy that will be linked by a central blade-like walkway.

Olympic Delivery Authority infrastructure and utilities director Simon Wright said Lagan’s appointment was the last major bridge contract up for grabs.

He said: “Lifting the first permanent new bridge into place and awarding the last major bridge construction contract are significant moments and keep us firmly on track as we create the backbone of the Olympic Park and a platform for future development.”

The Olympic bridge building programme will see more than 30 bridges built across the Park to create better connections in the area.
