Shaylor Group envisages annual turnover climbing from the current figure of £46m to £70m next year.

The group’s forward orderbook for 2009 stands at £50m and there is a further £12m of additional work under consideration.

Shaylor has issued its latest annual results covering the 12 months to 31 March 2008.

Pre-tax profit ran to £2.3m which was slightly higher than the previous year’s figure of £2.2m, a performance that was built on the back of a turnover of £43m.

During March, Shaylor bought John Davies Interiors (JDI) at a total cost of £3.2m, the goodwill element of this running to £1.8m. JDI had £2.7m of debtors and £2.1m of creditors.

Steve Shaylor, chief executive, said that JDI’s culture made it a good fit.

Shaylor operates through five divisions:

  • construction – average project value of £5m
  • strategic alliance – now in fourth year of partnership with Ministry of Justice
  • special projects – average project value of £300,000
  • John Davies Interiors
  • developments – focus on low-risk industrial, commercial and mixed-use schemes

“We are looking to further our presence within the Midlands,” said Shaylor whose group operates from a headquarters in Aldridge, West Midlands, while JDI’s main base is close-by in Oldbury though it also has a satellite office sited within the M25.

Steve Watson has been appointed as construction manager in the Shaylor construction business. He has worked in the construction industry for 35 years, the last four of these being within Shaylor.

The group says: “Steve has had many experiences, both good and bad, and says he has the grey hair to prove it.” He remembers his first week’s wage being less than £16.

Watson is pretty hot at golf, with a single-figure handicap, and is learning Italian. “He believes this will stand him in good stead when Shaylor opens its European HQ,” says the group, “failing that it will help him achieve his personal aim of retiring to a hotter climate.”
