Hanson is to make 38 workers redundant as it closes a brickworks in Swillington, Leeds.
Hanson said it took the decision to close the 46-year-old factory due to a 40% fall in the market for bricks.
Plant operative Ian Bell told the BBC: "It's like a tight-knit community here and all the lads are gutted.
"We've always pulled through in the past but I've never known it as bad as this time."
