Bovis Lend Lease is to use a ‘black box’ data logging system for tower cranes working on its multi-crane sites.
The first installation of the Crane Integrated Safety System (CISS), developed by Bovis and Aspect International, will be at the Broadcasting House site for the BBC which has four cranes.
The system is designed to increase visibility for tower crane operators and uses a hands-free system to improve communications with banksmen.
Bovis does not own any tower cranes, preferring to uses a number of crane hire companies, and will be looking to roll out the system on a project by project basis.
Nick Pollard, Bovis Lend Lease chief executive officer, said: “The CISS improves communications and visibility resulting in the safer slinging of loads, improved coordination between drivers and increased hook time.”
Aspect’s managing director Geoffrey Sinnerton said: “Our trials have indicated that we can significantly improve safety in changing the way crane operations are conducted. Fluid and constant communications and feedback between banksmen and crane operators lead to enhanced safety with allied productivity benefits.”
