Network Rail faces engineering inquest

Pressure is growing on Network Rail to hold an inquiry into a week of train delays in the wake of engineering work over Christmas and New Year.

Opposition MPs are calling for a probe into problems which have stranded thousands of commuters across the network.

Overhead power lines have failed in Warwickshire, north London, Buckinghamshire and Warwickshire causing chaos for commuters.

Rail minister Andrew Adonis is closely monitoring the situation following accusations work was rushed through to open on time.

Shadow transport secretary Theresa Villiers said: “If there is any truth in the claim that disruptions have been caused by rushed work by Network Rail, this would be a serious problem.

“Rail passengers need to be assured that the work Network Rail did well to complete by the December 2008 deadline has been done to the highest possible standard.”
