The National Plant and Equipment Register (TER) has published a Plant & Equipment Identification Guide aimed at helping the police and others combat plant theft.
The free 46-page booklet contains information about manufacturers' serial numbering and tell-signs that can indicate a machine has been stolen. "Often suspicious plant is not investigated simply because an officer does not have the necessary technical knowledge and therefore the confidence to approach a piece of equipment," said TER's manager Tim Purbrick.
"Plant and equipment [theft] is often hard to investigate because of the difficulty in finding the correct identification number or, having found an ID number, the difficulty in finding a theft or owner record," he said.
Copies of the guides are available from TER at info@ter-europe.org.
