Scientists have discovered how to make concrete stronger, allowing the possibility of a new generation of lightweight, durable buildings and bridges, according to the Times.
Experiments showed that when concrete particles are packed together more tightly, the material deforms less over time.
The finding explains why cement becomes stronger when mixed with minerals such as silica.
The study was published today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS).
