A lot has happened in the week that I've been on hols. A lot of very unfortunate people have been flooded out of their homes in the west of England, and even then, housing minister Yvette Cooper has insisted that government plans to build three million new homes will continue - even if it means building on flood plains.
Cooper's plans are welcome, but there are some very real issues. Firstly, who'd want to buy a house on a flood plain if we're starting to see global warming's effects? And who in their right mind would want to build on a flood plain if their work is likely to be washed away overnight?
Perhaps one of the most worrying issues, though, is that we'll just see even more hen-house type dwellings of the sort that populate many new developments. Red-brick boxes might be cheaper to build, but they are hardly going to add to the appearance of our land. There must be something better we can do...even hen houses are going upmarket these days, so there has to be some hope for housing!
An old style hen house....

And the newer alternative.....
