Next month should see the demolition of Southwark Towers. In its place will be the imaginatively titled Shard London Bridge, first dreamt up in 2000. It was originally planned to be over 1,200 feet tall with 87 stories but 9/11 cut the project to a more conservative, possibly less conspicuous 1,000 feet (300 metres).

This ‘shard of glass’ took 3 years to be granted planning permission as locals gave its name unable to see a place for such a modern skyscraper ‘tearing a cultural gash across the London skyline by hiding views of Saint Paul's Cathedral’.
This is certainly the most piercing structure on the London skyline when compared with the domes and flat roofs and is planned to be the tallest not only in the UK but also in Europe.
A public viewing gallery is planned at the top of the Shard and is expected to draw over 2 million visitors per year, around the same number who visit the London Eye.
With the current tenants PricewaterhouseCoopers due to move out in August the completion date now looks like 2010 at a cost of £350,000,000

I know there was some talk of Donald Trump working a skyscraper deal in Chicago.
I recently saw a show on the discovery channel that showed some models and renderings of a multi-story superfortress. The this was amazing. br />

Here's some updated news which may prove useful. The webcast contains some useful info, on a tower which I think will add dramatically to the London skyline. I currently live in Chicago (...although in my field of work) I'm in London alot. But the Chicago skyline "magnificent !!!" although I must admit it doesn't have the character London has to offer overall.
