Cobra Middlesbrough Limited has been operating Liebherr wheeled loaders at their rock salt processing facilities in North Road for a number of years and these highly specialised materials handlers are fully equipped and protected for what is an extremely corrosive working environment.

Proof of the success of these machines is that Cobra has taken another Liebherr loader on a three-year equipment supply and maintenance contract. A new generation L 5502plus2 ZK-HL wheeled loader joins an existing L 566, replacing an L 544 which has come to the end of its long, productive and trouble-free working life.

Cobra Middlesbrough Limited handles and processes around 500,000 tonnes of rock salt a year under contract to Cleveland Potash Limited and which arrives on site by rail from Boulby Potash mine. The main uses for this product are road treatment during the icy winter months and, in a finer screened form, for animal feed salt. The incoming bottom-dump rail wagons discharge the rock salt into conveyors below ground, from where it is conveyed to the main stockpiles and subsequent processing. Cobra distributes nationwide, with some of the rock salt destined for export to continental Europe and America.

The Liebherr wheeled loading shovels carry out numerous tasks, including stockpile management, loading trucks and spreaders and conveyor hopper loading for feeding specialist dry bulk tankers. The winter time is undoubtedly the busiest period, when large volumes of salt need to be handled and loaded onto trucks and specialist vehicles for the vital task of ensuring that roads are treated against icing. The loaders work predominantly outside but also undertake stockpile management and conveyor hopper feeding inside the processing sheds.

The Liebherr L 5502plus2 ZK-HL is a high-lift version with Z-pattern bucket linkage and is an articulated, hydrostatically driven wheeled loader in the 16 tonnes class with a tipping load of 11,650kg. Power is supplied by a Liebherr made en-gine which develops 130kW and is fully compliant with Stage IIIA / Tier 3 emissions. The standard general purpose bucket has a capacity of 3m³ and, combined with the HL arms, provides a superb load-over-height of 4.3 metres - ideal for loading material into bulkers and a combination that gives excellent productivity in a simple and cost-effective package.

An important feature of the L 550 is a high level, isolated cooling system which is equipped with an automatically reversing fan to maintain radiator cleanliness and efficiency; cyclonic engine air pre-cleaners are also included to combat the dusty environment. The hydrostatic driveline system on the loader contributes to considerable fuel consumption

It features some outstanding machine operating skills and co-ordination as the operator of the Caterpillar M315C picks up basketballs in a clamshell grab and shoots to score 5 baskets in 4 minutes on the German tv show Wetten Dass.

We need more tv like this in the UK maybe we could call it the X-cavator factor! Enjoy.

Here's a mooo-ving tale from a friend of the Digger blog Jim Mudge.

Earlier this year Jim hired a Takeuchi TB125 mini excavator from national plant hire company Morris Leslie's to do a job for his Father on their farm in Devon.

The job involved excavating a 600m long trench to a depth of around 1m to take water pipe that would eventually supply a water trough for cattle and sheep.

Whilst Jim was digging the trench a young calf fell in and got jammed in the excavation.

Luckily for Jim he was able to ramp down the front of the trench to make an escape route for the calf who none the worse for wear quite happily wandered off to catch up with his mates in the field.

Jim commented on the events of the day "Now what's that saying never work with animals and children" !

Here we go with some more fantastic photos from our resident man down under Gary Steen.

Details about how this incident happned are sketchy but it looks like the Caterpillar 785B dumptruck has mounted the bank with a full load on and that has caused it to flip over!

Bearing in mind that a Cat 785B is in the 150 ton weight bracket and has a top speed in the region of 34 mph it must of been a very scary moment for the operator!

In this series of photos we see the results of a thermal blowout that occured at the Lihir gold mine in Papua New Guinea which had devastating effects on the equipment in the surrounding area!

These two massive machines which include a Caterpillar dumptruck and a 525 ton O&K face shovel with a 26m bucket on it appear to have been tossed around like toys by the force of the blowout.

This open-pit mine is in an active geothermal area within a collapsed volcanic crater that has been breached on the eastern side by the ocean. The groundwater temperatures in the mine area are generally above 60oC, creating a technically challenging mining environment.

And finally an impressive overview shot of the Lihir open-pit gold mine which commenced operations in mid-1997. It must be a very tough place to work in.

I start this week with some really sad news which certainly came as a shock to me when I was told last Thursday.

Contract Journal a magazine that I have read all of my working life is to close at the end of November after 130 years in business along with ContractJournal.com.

RBI's Construction Group will continue to organise the SED exhibition, and will continue to run the SED365 website. It will also continue to publish the magazine Plant Managers' Journal, which will be renamed SED - the magazine.

This sad news will probably spell the end of my Digger blog in its present format although talks are still ongoing to see if it can be saved.

Dear readers please be rest assured that I will do my best to continue the blog in some format and will keep you informed over the next couple of weeks.

I owe it to you all for making the Digger blog the success it has become over the last 12 months and would like to personally thank you all for the hundreds of emails of encouragement and great material that I have received during that time.

I would also like to thank Will Mann for giving me the opportunity to do this and for having the faith to let a machine operator with a crazy passion for earthmoving machinery to fulfil a dream.

So for now we will continue as we were and lets enjoy our time here while we can!

With Christmas fast approaching here is an excellent gift idea for anyone with an interest in heavy plant & machinery.

This first class calendar has been produced by our good friends at the German machinery website Bauforum24

After four months of production work this amazing calendar is now ready for sale. It was well worth all the work says Bauforums Christian Kock "since June we´ve been all through Europe to catch spectacular machines in equally sensational locations. From Italy to Finland, from England to Poland - round about 14.000 kilometres for 12 sensationally staged motifs".

Check out this superb video and buy using the link
Bauforum24 - Heavy Equipment Calendar 2010 from Bauforum24 on Vimeo.

Our good friends at Hyundai have highlighted this video of one of the latest dash 9 series excavators in action in New Zealand.

This fine looking machine which appears to be sporting rubber track pads is in action Installing the second of two new tracks at the Chalmers St level crossing in Avondale, Auckland, New Zealand replacing the old single track railway.

That's certainly a fair bit of weight to be lifting over the side, and if my memory serves me right when I was operating road railers here in the UK for Hydrex 5 or 6 years ago that would have been done as a tandem lift.

Digger got into tiltrotator mode last week at the UK launch of Swedish manufacturer Steelwrist.

Despite the good old English weather doing it's upmost to put a dampener on the event, a wide variety of journalists, machinery owners & operators, salesman and other industry professionals enjoyed the presentation and product demonstration which was held close to the company's new UK base in Warwickshire.

The tiltrotator concept was first invented in Sweden in 1984 by one single company, for the first 5 to 6 years sales were poor and eventually the company went bankrupt, this lead to the formation of two smaller firms that continued to develop and market the product.

In 1990 sales of the product started to take off and by 1997 market penetration had gone from 0% to 90% in the 3ton - 25 ton excavator range.

In Norway today, total market penetration is around 60%, but 100% of all new machines being delivered now come equipped with a tilt-rotator system. Many other European countrys are showing great interest to including Holland and France and even here in the UK , where old habits die hard there are already an estimated 800 users of tiltrotator systems.

Steelwrist are one of the youngest companys on the tiltrotator scene having been formed in 2005 but have certainly taken the product to another level with a whole host of forward thinking and innovative improvements built into the product.

Take for instance the fact that the Steewrist tiltrotator tilts up to 45° in both directions, which is more than any other tiltrotator on the market. The sharper tilt angles can boost
a machines flexibility and improves its productivity. This benefit is obtained by reducing the need to move the excavator.

Also the Steelwrist tiltrotator has the lowest build height which is critical in maintaining valuable excavating breakout power. One inch extra installation height can reduce your excavating power by more than 10%!

Add to that, specially dedicated Steelwrist control levers and an integrated in cab touch screen control system that allows you to fine tune your tiltrotator in terms of rotation and tilt speeds and a whole host of other options. It's clear to see that the Steelwrist is a very special product indeed!

A fine endorsment of the product has come from Volvo Construction Equipment who have recently appointed Steelwrist AB as it's preferred supplier of tiltrotators in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

On the demo plot on the day were two Volvo excavators, an EC35C (3565 kg) mini excavator which was equipped with the Steelwrist X04.
And an EC160C excavator which is in the (16,7-19,1 ton) class which was equipped with the Steelwrist X18.

The EC160C is owned and operated by Calvin Fuller, a long term fan of the tiltrotator concept who has had them fitted to his machines for over 7 years.

Calvin's machine can only be described as an "all singing all dancing" piece of kit and it certainly impressed me when I was kindly allowed to take to the controls, as you can see it features the very useful triple articulation boom which are not often seen in the UK on tracked machines and the optional extra dozer blade, add to that the tilt-rotator and you have one amazing machine which must help keep Calvin in demand on any jobsite!

I got a chance to try out the tiltrotator for myself !

Here is a video of Calvin in action on the demo plot.

All Steelwrist tiltrotators feature a fully hydraulic quick coupler system as standard as shown here on the X04 model fitted to the EC35C. These quick coupler systems are fully compliant with all current UK legislation.

There so many benefits to having a tiltrotator mounted on your excavator you can change the way you work and achieve a significantly higher productivity.

Digging around poles, close to house foundations, close to pipes etc can be done much faster and without moving the excavator. The soil disturbance will be reduced which is often greatly appreciated by customers.

Owners often find that they get more work and new jobs after having a tiltrotator fitted, and many tasks on site can be completed much more quickly as well as the benefits of greater fuel efficency.

Watch out for more exciting Steelwrist news coming to the pages of the Digger blog over the coming months.

How many of us operators have had that sliding feeling when you are loading a tracked excavator onto a low loader/lowboy trailer. Picture the scene, its cold, muddy and wet the trailer bed is all metal and it is parked on a slight camber, you make it up the ramps and then she just starts sliding off the side!

This happened to me once on an old Hymac 580D and I must say it was a very frightening experience indeed. So just imagine if it was to happen with a massive mining sized excavator like a Komatsu PC5500 for instance?

Well we have received this batch of photos from two of our friends down under which show a machine slip which happened recently.

This incident happened at Griffin Coal Mine at Collie in Western Australia and apparently is not the first time that something like this has taken place.

Its a slightly different scenario though as by all accounts the PC5500 which weighs in the region of 527000kg was already on the trailer and being moved to a different location in the mine when the chains which were securing it to the trailer snapped under the strain.

Someone on the ground was heard to say "I think we might need some bigger chains mate" !

I suspect a fairly expensive trailer repair bill was the order of the day after this event.

Also on static display at the recent New Holland Grand Prix was one of a number of New Holland E215B excavators that the Italian fire service has recently taken delivery of following a series of tenders won by the Fiat Group's yellow brand.

This machine looked superb in its red fire service livery and certainly attracted a lot of attention from operators and the public who were attending the grand prix.

Of particular interest to me was the familiar European style triple articulation boom which is such a useful feature but one that is rarely seen in the UK except on "rubber ducks" or machines that have been imported from the continent.

Also note the narrow track pads fitted to this machine which are ideal when working on rocky terrain so often encountered in Italy.

The E215B tips the scales at 23 310 kg and features an environmentally friendly Tier 3A CNH 6 cylinder engine which produces a net flywheel power of 118 kW - 158 hp.

It can carry buckets ranging from 0.52 to 1.31 m3 and is piped to allow fitment of many other attachments.

The day after the main Grand Prix event the Italian fire brigade held their own competition in which the firemen competed in a single combined test on the various machines.

The winner of this fiercely competitive series of challenges was Angleo Vidori from Alessandria, and closely followed by Salvatore Mancuso from Turin and Umberto Gatti from Asti.

Here is a group photo of the fire brigade competitors and members of the excellent New Holland team with the stunning E215B in the background.

The latest round of New Hollands Grand Prix event took place last weekend in the beautiful city of Turin in Italy and Digger was there to capture the competition.

The tests were held in front of the Torino Esposizioni building which is on the margins of Parco del Valentino, near the Polytechnic's School of Architecture - an evocative location for an event that has garnered increasing success year after year. Five teams of operators took part this year representing Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

The competitors took part in a total of five tests each throughout the event which were mostly against the clock.

In "Safety Penalty" the operators were using a New Holland E80MSR crawler midi excavator (operating weight: 8300 kg) to take 5 penalty shots at goal in a timed period of 4 minutes. The operator was allowed one machine rotation to strike the New Holland-Juventus football and then had to return the bucket to its initial start up point to stop the clock.

This was a fiercely competitive game combining the art of machine operating and the other big passion in many mens lives football, the team members were very vocal as they encouraged thier fellow teamates from the sidelines.

The top three in this event were in reverse order..
3rd place. Manuel Calero from Spain with a score of 90 points.
2nd place. Adam Howarth from UK with a score of 78 points.
1st place. Julio Antonio Gil from Spain with a score of 74 points.

In "Hard Hat" the contestants had a tough challenge on their hands! Using a New Holland E16 mini excavator (operating weight: 1450 kg) with a drop chain and hook hanging from the bucket the task was took pick up the hard hats using the hook and drop them into one of two different sized oil drums from event sponsor Petronas.

Once again the operators had 4 minutes to get as many hats in the drums as possible to achieve the best score with various penalties to be applied along the way if a drum was knocked over for example. This challenge did give the operators some problems as the hard hats had a tendancy to roll around on the floor and at times looked very frustrating for them.

The top three in the Hard Hat test were..
3rd place. Arturo Zaccone of Italy with a score of 66 points.
2nd place. Gavin Wood of UK with a score of 37 points.
1st place. Talovic Musidin of Switzerland with a score of 20 points.

In "Safety Belt" the competitiors were at the controls of a New Holland L170 skid steer loader (operating weight: 3220 kg) in which they were required to lift a pallet with a bucket of water on it filled to a height of 25cm. They then had to do two laps of a marked out course in under 4 minutes whilst trying to prevent the water from spilling over the top of the bucket.
.
Here we see UK contestant Gavin Wood getting to grips with the ramp along the course!

On completion of the two laps the pallet had to be returned to is starting position and the machine parked in its starp up location, the judges then measured the remaining water in the bucket and a 3 second penalty was applied for every cm of water lost during the round.

Top three competitors in this event were ..
3rd place. Rene Pasewaldt from Germany with a score of 156 points.
2nd place. Manuel Calero from Spain with a score of 144 points.
1st place. Julio Antonio Gil from Spain with a score of 141 points.

"Dangerous Sign" involved a New Holland E22.2SR mini excavator (operating weight: 2550 kg) in which the contestants had to knock down six numbered wooden blocks in a numerical order and in the fastest time possible without touching the metal boundary posts.

The operators were allowed 4 minutes to complete this trial but of course with such a high standard of operators attending the event such a lot of time was simply not required. Penalties in this event included 10 seconds for every metal post knocked and if the blocks were knocked down in the wrong order then that competitor received 120 seconds.
Top three in this event were..
3rd place. Adam Howarth from UK with a score of 22 points
2nd place Ewan Irvine from UK with a joint score of 22 points
1st place Luigi Miglietta from Italy with an amazing score of 17 points!

Safety in the workplace was a big feature at this years event and a new development for the 2009 edition was the sponsorship from INAIL, the Italian national institute for work-related injury insurance, which testifies to New Holland Construction's commitment to safety.

The safety message was well represented in the "Warning Label" test in which working as a team the competitors had to correctly place warning signs in the correct place on a New Holland machine.
The top three in this test were ..
3rd place. Germany with 128 points.
2nd place. Italy with 122 points.
1st place. Spain with 102 points.
Here we see the victorious Spanish team.

At the awards evening the Champion of the Champions, was announced in which the combined scores of all four tests were taken into account , the top three positions went, in the following order, to: Manuel Calero (Spain), Gavin Wood (United Kingdom) and Cristian Tanera (Italy).

Spain also won the Special Media Award as Best Country, and Best Individual prize went to Rene Pasewaldt from Germany. The United Kingdom was awarded a special prize for Fair Play.

This years event was also open to the public and was very much treated as a family day out by the local population. The children certainly seemed to be enjoying the toy diggers in the play area.
The crowds were further more excited when two players from New Holland sponsored Juventus FC visited the event to try their hand at taking a penalty with the E16 mini excavator.

The Fiat-Allis FD50 is quite a rare beast these days having been introduced in the early 1980's as a replacement for the 70 ton, 524hp 41B.

It's great to see old dozers like this still hard at work earning their keep alongside the more modern kit.

Talking of machinery from Italy look out for my review of the New Holland Grand Prix 2009 (Turin) coming to the pages of Digger this weekend!

The Caterpillar D9T dozers are generally used for tip & haul road formation and maintenance, however this photo captures one of 4 Cat D9's on site performing coal stockpiling duties.

There are two Caterpillar D10T's in operation at the Broken Cross mine which are primarily used to level the excavated overburden which is being tipped by the fleet of Cat 777F dumptrucks on site.

As is the normal practice on sites these days the dumptrucks are not allowed to reverse to close to the edge of the tipping area and the D10T is deployed to push the loads to the tip face.

These large trucks from Komatsu are powered by komatsu's own SDA16V160 engine which develops 1865kw @1900rpm.

The 830E's unladen weight is 164,200kg and has a payload capacity of 221,648kg;
They have a heaped capacity of 147 cubic metres.

This new truck certainly proved a popular attraction at a recent open day when it was also displayed with the Komatsu sponsored V8 Supercar.
