England footballers take note. Here’s a cautionary tale about how short-lived your playing career can be. It’s something they would have done well to remember during last week’s debacle against Croatia.
You may remember a few weeks back that I mocked Arsenal star Theo Walcott for appearing in a publicity shot for opening of an RFSF skip recycling centre in Southampton. I may also have made a joke at his expense about the number of games he was getting at the club.
The words clearly smarted. He went on to score twice in a 7-0 Champions League drubbing of Slavia Prague and there were calls to have him back in the England side. He certainly couldn’t have done any worse than the gutless wonders last Wednesday night.
So what can most players expect when their careers are over? Which may be quicker than some expect following the Croatia game. Well, take a look at Peter Beardsley. The 46-year-old ex-Liverpool striker is pictured cutting the metaphorical ribbon at the opening of David Proos¹s third roofing supplies centre in Gateshead (see photo xx).
