I recently popped along to Parliament to eavesdrop on the BERR Committee on construction. Try getting through security with a hard hat on - it’s not easy.
Anyway, one thing that irks committee chairman Peter Luff is the bewildering array of trade bodies in the industry. So far, we’ve seen contributions from: CC; CIC; CPA; UCATT; ConstructionSkills; Unite; CE; CABE; BRE; BSRIA; CIRIA; and the FMB.
So you can’t blame Luff for coming up with quirky ways to remember who they all are. And he offered us a taster last week of how he does it - BSRIA: an “obscure country in the Middle East” (the kind of place the Foreign Office sends you as punishment, apparently). CIRIA: a “much more significant” country in the Middle East. And finally BRE (pronounced ‘bree’): A character in TV show Desperate Housewives.
Nice one, Luff. Tell you what, we’ll sort all our industry bodies into a more sensible number the day you convince government to put responsibility for construction into one department instead of seven.
