Now I may not know much about architecture, but I know what I like. And it's nice to know I'm not alone on this one.
For example, Future Systems' iconic Selfridges building in Birmingham, which won a clutch of gongs including the 2004 RIBA Award for Architecture, has now been voted the ugliest building in the UK. Admittedly, it was handed that accolade following a survey of spotty Playstation-toting yoof conducted by computer game manufacturer EA, but I still find it comforting. Why? Because I always thought that Selfridges building looked like an oversized pin cushion. And to add insult to injury, they forgot the windows.
Meanwhile, the Liver Building in Liverpool came in sixth in the top 10 list of ugliness. Another decision I wholeheartedly agree with: despite being designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas, completed in 1911, and forming part of a UNESCO world heritage site, I always had a suspicion people only thought it looked good because it was surrounded by the rest of Liverpool.
And now Britain's computer gaming spods have proved me right.
Here's that list of the top 10 ugliest in full:
- Selfridges, Birmingham
- Birmingham Central Library
- Angel of the North, Newcastle
- Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh
- Arndale Centre, Manchester
- The Liver Building, Liverpool
- Spaghetti Junction, Birmingham
- Drake Circus, Plymouth
- Liverpool Cathedral (we are not told which one) and
- Park Hill flats, Sheffield.

I believe the angel of the north and spagetti junction are structures, correct me if I'm wrong but a building is a structure with walls and a roof.
