OK, so beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But here's a final thought on the visual impact of windfarms.
What we need, perhaps, is somebody to alter our perception of them from alien giants to friendly newcomers. In the Independent some time back Thomas Sutcliffe suggested a new Wordsworth to convert us to them, as the original had converted us from fearing dark, Lake District crags to eulogising them.
He himself admires the four wind turbines pictured at Chelker reservoir between Ilkley and Skipton - I grew up in sight of them and have nothing against them either; they're now a welcome landmark on the way home. But, they're small by modern standards, and there are only four of them. It's a lot easier to generate a new, wind farm-inspired romanticism on this scale than some of the projects discussed earlier on this blog.

Driving past them the other week, the windmills at Chelker are in various states of dismantling. Anyone know why? Are they being refurbed or replaced with bigger ones?

According to local sources (parents, as it happens) the plan is to replace the existing four turbines with two, much bigger turbines, some reports say 400 feet high (that's 120m), three times the height of the existing turbines. I'm beginning, against all expectation, to feel less benign towards wind power...
