Red sky at night, or green, or blue... - Redruth's delight

New Cut Cross 2 Dec 07 2.jpgDid you know the first house in the world to have gas lighting was in the Cornish town of Redruth? All thanks to the fact William Murdoch, the inventor of gas lighting, lived in the town and used his own home as an experiment. Now the town is intent on setting another lighint first.

It hopes to become the first in the world to be completely lit at night by LEDs. The new lights will be used initially to light up the town's historic buildings and will replace the conventional CFL-blub lighting. More are planned, and he town also hopes they will reduce reliance on sodium street lighting and thus light pollution, as well as providing an 80% reduction in energy bills. Of course no lights at all would use no energy at all... but then no-one would be able to appreciate the nocturnal beauty of Redruth's stanary architecture. You can't have everything.
