Death Toll Increases, despite the downturn

"Though the figure - for the months of April to September - represents a decrease on the total for the same period last year, campaigners say it may have been affected by the recent decrease in building activity."

"The total consists of 16 workers and two members of the public killed in building site accidents."

"It is believed six more workers were fatally injured on sites last month."

Face it Guys and Gals, we continually spout on about being ever-so-good at this and we persist in our boasts about doing that well but what are we are learning from all of this unnecessary loss of life, we're learning nothing whatsoever!

As for campaigners stating that it "MAY have been affected by the recent decrease in building activity" I'm stunned by their obvious grasp of the....obvious?

Bottom line is, there aren't enough independent Site Inspectors out there, those ‘extra pairs of fresh eyes' monitoring and assisting those unfortunate management guys who should be and are more than capable of  monitoring the situation themselves but, because of this increasing need for stakeholders and shiny suits to waste paper in order to justify their existences, the site Management guys are otherwise engaged filling in endless reams of tick charts, endless progress and valuation statements along with reams of other useless bureaucratic gobbledygook.

This situation is disgusting and instead of blaming the HSE or the Office of Rail Regulation those, allegedly in command, those who endlessly spout out the facts about fatalities in construction need to ask their mirror, whilst shaving it in the morning...Am I proficient in what it is that I am getting paid shed-loads to do, or do I need help?

Answer - No you are not and yes you do!

Molevalleyman this is getteing scary as once again i am in agreement with you , a friend of mine works for the HSE and he told me himself that when construction was at its best 2 years ago they did not have any where near enough inspectors to cover the sites, he has now told me even in the down turn they still dont and with the constant new political issues that keep coming in they dont have the man power to work in the manner they are suppost to nine times out of ten then arrive at your gates after something has been reported to them. This is too late to be any help to those that as you put cpould do with a freesh set of eyes. I am thefirst to commend the vast amount of site management that do not require the intervention of the inspectors and those that are capable of running the tight safe ship,,,,,but there are some that do require some help,,,,,, and where is it,,,,,,,,over worked and pushed to the limit and no use to those that need it. Somehow somthing must change as what use are all the rules and regulations and inspections if no one is avaliable to run the site visits and inspections due to being overworked and understaffed this is not making construction safe ,,,,the accidents and incidents prove this,,,,,,,,,,we have some of the best trained site management in the world but they are bogged down with paper work and struggle like hell to find the hours in the day to cope,,,, this does not make a site safe but it does make the job much harder for those trying to enforce safety and keep sites safe. The inspectors are overworked and try there best but they are fighting a loosing battle, The HSE need to sort themselves out it has come to a point that these poeple are often lesser qualified than the site management but have to try and enforce issues on poeple that do not respect them due to there job,,,,,, the job is not the problem,,,,,oten its the fact that they turn up once and try to enforce issues that poeple do not understand, or they only come on site to sort the findings after an accident.

Reality we should respect there job even if we dont respect the policies

Forced to be political , cos someone killed practical

    LONG LIVE PRACTICAL

    Rock.itt

I respect your views and would add that we only seem to fall out when I 'champion' those H&SE guys who are, lets face it struggling big-time, through no fault of their own, there are just not enough of them and the regulations are not in keeping with task!

Great Britain has unfortunately, become a 'money-for-nothing' nation - i.e. do as little as you can for shed-loads in return and the bottom line is, it can't continue and as I have noted earlier, somewhere in this forum, we are ALL accountable for young Tommy Smith not getting home because He's laying dead beneath a collapsed crane, victim of some onerous cutback , we are ALL accountable for giving 'value for money' long gone are those days when one turned up for work and sat in the canteen until ten am, drinking gallons of tea and reading the Daily Star (I know about that because as a young carpenter apprentice, I had to make the bloomin tea!)

We agree on the appalling fact that there are so many good managers out there that, instead of being able to do what they have trained very hard to do, they are instead, 'administrators' - filling in endless reams of accounts rubbish that should in reality, be filled in by the administration bods back in the office.

The truth is, it's not going to get any better until those fat-cats start their brains up prior to putting their mouths into gear and decide to do something about the mess we're in. It's not all about profit (though most wouldn't agree), it's about 'pride in the job' it's about 'Made in Britain' it's about WOW!, we've got through a whole week without killing anybody and why?

Because we have left the Site Management alone.... to Manage the site.

I for one would never knock the H&SE or anyone else for trying as hard as they clearly do to reduce the pain and suffering caused by pure malevolence of this now somewhat collapsed construction environment but, I do look forward to major improvement without the incessant bureaucracy misery.

    Be Lucky!

    Hi MVM,

Sorry for the delay in replying - been off for a few days.

The 'Joined on' dates look ok to me though? Send me a private message/email if you're still having problems.

    Will.
