    General chat area?

One for Janie I think.......but what about an area where we can discuss day to day things, something along the lines of General Chat? Create a little more of a community feel here where we can talk about other things in our lives apart from building/contruction etc? What does everyone else think?

Just a thought to perhaps liven the forums up a little :)

And it's certainly much appreciated. Yes

As this is the off-topic area: how's life in the north-west treating you?

How about an 'active topics' link so you can see new posts since last login? Saves having to trawl through the seperate forums looking for new posts / threads?

May also be worth adding a few more sections (work at height, ppe, tools & equipment etc) otherwise when the site starts to get stupidly busy (which it will!) it'll be easier to find threads.

From previous experience, it's a nightmare trying to move threads to appropriate sections at a later date !

    Hi Welder,

If you contribute to a thread, any replies will automatically be emailed to you. Additionally, when you go into the forums section, there should be a list down the right hand side of the page showing active threads, any threads you have contributed to, and any that have not been answered. When we upgrade to the next version later this year, there should be the facility to show posts you have not read since your last login.

In terms of adding new sections - I'm kind of waiting to see which topics prove most popular before starting any more sections - but I'm interested to hear about any topics we could start discussing that you think will prove popular.

    Cheers,

    Wll.

     Hi Will,

I think the main 'pro' for having a few more sections is so new users know where to post questions / start discussions, where they will be seen and not bogged down with other threads.

With only having 4 sections, it's not easy to work out where your post should go, and if you can't find a relevant section then you're likely to find another forum somewhere else to post in.

Lets say you have a question about using ladders on site, or 110v tools. It could go in either general or H&S, but if you need an answer quickly you want them to be in a section thats going to be read by someone who 'knows' what they're talking about. You'll probably find alot of users will only bother looking in sections they know about.

Maybe expand the Plant & Machinery section to cover Tools & Equipment, H&S split into sections for people who implement it, and the worker who has to work by it etc.

And definately a Suggestions section. Good way to get feedback and ideas!

Thats a few of my ideas anyway!

    Dan

Another thing to get a few more regulars would be a jobs section. With the trade as it is at the moment, there's plenty of people looking for work and could be a good opportunity to get some knowledgeable tradesmen on board to help out with questions.

    Hi Dan,

Forget to mention that there is a colour coding system for threads - if a thread has a red star next to it, that means there are posts in there that you have not read yet. The stars are yellow if you've read the latest post. Similarly, on the forum homepage, if there are red blobs next to a section, that means there are posts in it you have not read. They are green if you've read every post.

The suggestions idea is a good one. With the jobs section - do you mean a place where people can advertise their services or advertise a vacancy? Or somewhere for people to post technical advice?

    Cheers, Will.

Advertise vacancies. Would need to be set up as a 'no reply' type section so the first poster could post the job and contact details, otherwise they would probably get full of questions about the job and make it quite messy!

Could even charge for it if CJ is that way inclined! £5 a post or something!

Just another way to get people logging on, and hopefully while they're looking for work they will stay around and join in with some other discussions.
