Legal requirements for plant on a public highway?

I have often pondered this while driving 20ton ducks on the road!

After hearing a story of two moxy drivers who were hammered by the courts for not having a HGV licence even though they had CPCS Licence.

Does anyone know the legal requirements of using heavy plant on a public highway and what are the requirements of the operator?

There is no legal requirement for plant operators to hold a road driving license unless they wish to drive their vehicles on the public highway.

All plant driven on the public highway must comply with the appropriate road traffic legislation i.e. HGV etc.

Have a look in here Supa  http://www.hse.gov.uk/workplacetransport/faq.htm#car

Indeed; I echo the above - to legally drive our road layer I have to have an LGV licence, the machine be taxed (at £800+p/a!!)

    The world has gone mad!!

Funny this thread should appear, saw a rubber duck being driven along a B road locally yesterday, thought it a bit risky.....
