Does anyone know what the criteria for hireing excavators etc? For insurance purposes, do you need a named operator with a valid ticket to use one, and if you have not got a valid ticket can you then not hire one? Or can any one sit on the machine as long as its on private land?

My argument is that if you have not got a ticket, then how can you use one safely? Surely it should be like a car - you can not hire one of those without a valid driving licence?

I'm not a machine driver IIah but I have hired one for working at home

 The only ticket you need is the one with a picture of the queen on saying "I Promise To Pay The Bearer"

You don't need any license to operate a machine on private land! 

 Because they operate on a public highway and what they have is a DVLA license!

What we have is a mickey mouse license that means nothing in the real world outside construction!
